LevLane approached Pretty Damn Sweet to create a series of character based explainer animations for United Concordia Dental. The videos would exist on social media as well as being debuted on screens in a tradeshow booth during an event, so the design system needed to be flexible enough to work across a diverse rollout. 

We began by finding the tone and style of the character design and from there, the rest of the environments and scene building would follow. The scripts were fun so we wanted the design to be fun as well, giving characters exaggerated proportions and stylish hair and clothing beaming with personality. As with any character set, we thought long and hard about who these people were - what lifestyle, gender, ethnicity, body type, etc. With the opportunity to have a diverse set of characters and a wonderfully colorful brand palette, we decided to keep the rest as simple as possible to keep the focus on the messaging. Simplistic environments and basic facial expressions felt like the perfect balance, only showing what was necessary to convey the core emotion and key action of each scene.

PROCESS

From hand drawn sketches, to illustrated final renderings, the design process focused on simple shape lines with accents of wildness and texture. The motion was also kept simple, as we wanted the typography and artwork to shine through almost as moving wallpapers for those looking in the tradeshow booth.

This was a super fun one and made us think about upgrading our dental insurance!
